Are You CIO Material?
-
John McCreavy, the Secret CIO/columnist for
InformationWeek.com is a "real-life CIO of a billion-dollar-plus company" --
even if that really isn't his true name. In his Feb 14, 2011 piece he
discusses what he thinks it will take for Information Technology managers to
"go from high-performing to CIO-caliber" ...

Dumb Little Man (dot) com
-
One of my favorite websites is called Dumb Little Man. The site's
description says it best: "Welcome to Dumb Little Man! Each week we provide
a handful of tips that will save you money, increase your productivity, or
simply keep you sane." Indeed. "DLM" posts a wonderful array of articles on
these, and other, topics ...

6 Ways to a More Relaxed You
-
Everyone reacts to stress differently. Some people are seemingly immune to
it. Others need to "talk it out" and/or "act" it out -- sometimes
constructively, sometimes not. Others prefer to hold it all inside and act
like nothing's wrong -- until they blow a gasket! Assuming you're looking
for some ways to ease the stress, here ...

What are some ways to deliver effective performance
reviews?
-
Performance reviews are most effective when they're merely a "formalized
summary" of the daily feedback you give to your direct reports. Ideal
performance reviews consistently elicit two main reactions/comments from the reviewee, regardless of how well or poorly their performance was during the
given period ...

I specifically designed my leadership haiku for the attention-challenged
executive. Written in Twitter-format, each leadership lesson is less than
140 characters long. When you're ready for a pause in your day, relax, read
a few LeadershipHaiku, and ponder their deeper meaning, Grasshopper (!!).
Let them help you become more of the leader you've always wanted to be ...

//
Sometimes the WRONG thing / for one situation is / RIGHT for another. //
-
//
"I have it SOMEWHERE" / is not a filing system. / Go clean up that mess!
//
-
//
Are you clear on what / unintended outcomes your / decision might cause? //
-
//
When delegating / ask your staff to give updates / BEFORE you NEED them. //
-
//
Let staff challenge the / logic of your decisions. / Explain how you think.
//
-
//
Others will notice / and talk about what you do / and what you don't do.
//
-
//
Always FRAME ideas / so people can understand / both POINT and CONTEXT. //
-
//
What are the Next Steps? / ACTIONABILITY is / THE priority. //
Your reactions to my LeadershipHaiku are always welcomed. My favorite
response will receive a 15% discount coupon at the GGCI E-Store.
HOW TO REFER SOMEONE TO ME
I often hear, "So I'd like to refer some people to you, Barry, but I'm not
sure how to do that." The first step would be to recognize an opportunity to
do so. To that end, here are some things that others might naturally say,
during a conversation with you, that can provide you with a smooth
entre:
-
"My go-to guy at work's got great technical skills, but no people skills
what-so-ever."
-
"I wish I could do a better job of influencing without authority.'
-
"I need to develop a better relationship with my boss."
-
"I'm LOUSY at dealing with conflict."
-
"I know what I want to get done, but I can't seem to get it done."
-
"My boss says I need to think more strategically."
The second step would be for you to then simply say something like, "Wow, it
sounds like you gotta getta coach! And I know exactly who you should talk
to."
When asked "Who?," just give 'em my name (Barry Zweibel) and my number
(847-291-9735), email (info@ggci.com), or website (www.ggci.com) -- or
better yet, just email ME with their contact information and I'll take it
from there. Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy! (Thanks.)
