Friday Fun: Berated at Starbucks

So, okay, I'm not particularly proud of this, but I have about a half-dozen Starbucks within a short driving distance from me. And, to keep the coffee fresh, so to speak, I rotate which locations I go to.

Well this morning, I circled back to one that I haven't been to in a while and the lady behind the counter - Lisa, I think her name is - looks me right in the eye and asks, "Where have YOU been?"

Me? I've been going to the Plaza del Prado Starbucks lately, I said. "You have?" she retorted, "How DARE you. Hey, Jimmy, he's been going to Gloria's place. Can you even believe that?!" (Jimmy said, "Gloria's place? She's a piece of work, isn't she? Why would you want to go there?")

Um, because it's closer?

"Closer? What's that have to do with anything? This is supposed to be your Starbucks location-of-choice."

And I chose so today, so what are we even talking about here? I replied. "Nothing anymore," Lisa huffed. "We're done. Next."

Question: Is sarcasm a regular offering at your Starbucks location-of-choice?

Sounds to me like you'll only have to rotate around 5 locations from now on!

And, no, sarcasm is NOT on the menu around here. The most convenient location for me is staffed by several of my daughters' friends who always seem genuinely glad that I came by!

I have two very caring Starbucks location I frequent. Usually, if they have not see me in awhile they are eager to chit chat and see what's new. They employees are very friendly, professional and fun, which is why I go back. Maybe it's a "North Shore" thing.

I love donuts but they have so much fat. A friend told me about this website WWW.HOLEYDONUTS.NET. They make these low fat donuts that taste just like my favorite donuts but without the fat...OH my god they are really the best donuts i ever tasted ,it really doesnt taste like a low fat food....but you notice the light feeling after eating one...and it wont leave a grease ring on your napkin you really must try Holey Donuts!

I personally work at a Starbucks...most employees aren't like that, but that would depend on if you personally know them. We joke around with our customers, but that's because we personally know them. If you just go there periodically, then no I don't think they should have treated you like that. If you ever come around where I am...you would get great service.

Thanks for your comment, Sarah. My experience is that most Starbucks' aren't like that, as well. But too many of them are. I think they think that sarcasm is a form of good customer service - coffee-with-a-smile has morphed into caffeine-with-an-attitude. Blech!

As I’m sure you know, not everyone wants ‘room for cream’ or ‘something to go with that’ - or a third-rate stand-up routine - with their morning grande. I go for the coffee – and some occasional networking. If I wanted a show, I’d ask for a ticket ... or a cinnamon dolce latte!

I work at plaza del prado and I must say that cookie cutter service is very boring not only for the customers we know, but for us as well. We're just (mostly) regular people trying to have fun at work as well as earning a buck.

Enjoy your coffee! Stop by and say hi!

Thanks for your post, Adam. And the invitation! I will stop by - and ask for you.

Just to be clear, though, I certainly don't mind, as you so reasonably put it, "(mostly) regular people trying to have fun at work".

But, unsolicited, in-your-face, disrespectful, sarcasm is just bad customer service, made even worse, in my opinion, if it's a result of employee boredom.

In comparison, "cookie cutter service" would have been like a breath of fresh air and something to really celebrate, don't you agree?!
