Excerpted from There's a Hole in my Sidewalk , by Portia Nelson ... An Autobiography in Five Short Chapters:
Chapter 1.
I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter 2.
I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I cant believe I am in this same place. But it isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter 3.
I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in its a habit. But, my eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.
Chapter 4.
I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.
Chapter 5.
I walk down another street.
So what chapter are YOU in? And what's your plan?

Great article Barry. I am probably in chapter 4 most days, hoping to get to chapter 5 today. My plan? Hmmm...still thinking about that, thought I'm getting closer to finding it.
Dear Barry,
Great stuff, that hole in the sidewalk story. There was a time when I used to fall in (alot), but these days, I'm walking down new streets altogether...I wrote to you awhile ago, about a problem I was having...
Liked your Thanksgiving marker--to make a plan to move forward...Motivated me out of the despondent helplessness I was feeling--resulting from the overwhelming nature of the issue. Used it, but lagged a little...had a tentative plan in place by New Year's. Have many "newnesses" on the horizon...trusting the universe to work out the timing, but have set all the balls in motion (some, preliminarily--others more definitively)...Trusting it all to gel.
One caveat...some of those streets are LONG!!! So, I expect I'll be walking for AWHILE before all of this resolves, but I'm certain that my new destination will be worth the effort, and that I'll really like the place I'm in when I get there.
Thanks for the continued inspiration...always welcome your emails...Best of health & success to you in the New Year.
