What would a leadership consultant recommend?

The situation is this: An employee, with some great ideas, is just not being listened to by her boss. What would you recommend if you were her leadership consultant - or leadership coach?

Please post your comments.

More info, please. Is the employee with the great ideas not being LISTENED to, or not being HEARD? There's a difference. Are her ideas being ignored? Heard and dismissed? Heard, tweaked, and 'stolen'? Are the ideas simply too great (impractical) for the scope of the short-term goals or strategy of the company? Is the boss just blind to a good idea? Or perhaps just too insecure in his/her position to present the ideas to the decision makers? I think I'd start in these areas and see what turns up - then I'd consider the client's rapport with her boss' boss. Maybe it's time to bypass the middleman.

If his/her ideas are specifically to drive the business eg. increase sales, increase profit, etc. I would prepare a document with all the ideas, rational, support, benefits etc and would give it to the boss, the bosses boss as a "brainstorming" document. This way it is brought by him/her as a person with initiative and it does not necessarily alienate the boss by jumping over him/her. The key is to present it with them in good spirit for the benefit of the company.

How about calling it like it is: "Hey boss," she could say, "I've got something important to talk with you about and I need to know how to get you to listen." Then, no matter what the boss says, actually, quickly follow-up with "And what if THAT doesn't work?"
